Healthy, Happy Children

Active KidsBefore I say this, I should probably clarify one thing; I am not a scientist. I don’t claim to understand how the human body and mind work and why they do. Now, after stating that, I think I can say this with pretty high confidence; children are not genetically programmed to be healthy. Anyone disagree? Didn’t think so.

In fact, there seems to be something embedded deep inside of our kids to be as unhealthy as possible! When is the last time your child asked for seconds of broccoli? When’s the last time they got excited to brush their teeth or take a bath? Do you remember that time they asked to wear a helmet before riding their bike? Again, probably hasn’t ever happened.

Regardless whether our children agree with us or not, it is in their best interest to be healthy. We know that eating well helps them grow up to be big and strong! We know that brushing their teeth will keep them from getting nasty cavities down the line. And we know that they will probably have more friends if they don’t smell like yesterday’s leftovers.

Even though it can be difficult to teach our children good, healthy habits, it is not impossible. Here are just a few tips to start your child towards a healthier lifestyle:

Healthy eating starts close to home – Remember when your parents would say, “because I said so,” or, “do as I say, not as I do?” Remember how well that worked? Yeah, me neither. There is no one in the world your child looks up to more than you! If you really want your child to eat better, you’re going to have to bite the proverbial bullet and do the same. It’s not all bad though; you’ll start feeling better about yourself, and your kids’ healthy new eating habits!

Exercise! – It’s no secret that this generation of children loves electronics. Don’t get me wrong, I love technology (as you could probably tell since you’re reading an online blog), but it can definitely become a distraction. Nothing beats going on a walk with your family. The more you and your kids play together, the less time they will spend watching television and playing video games. Of course when you first start getting active, it may be hard to make it to the end of your driveway. Just remember that every step you and your child take together is a step towards a healthier lifestyle.

Educate them – Our children definitely aren’t stupid; they may just not understand what a healthy lifestyle actually looks like. If we can spend more time teaching them about hygiene and the way our bodies work, they will be more likely to take care of themselves. Products like this help them learn about themselves more clearly. When teaching them, don’t forget that learning should be fun. Sometimes a puzzle or food play set can help to get them excited about learning!

As you teach your children about being healthy, they will start to gain an appreciation for healthy living. You will happy to see them living healthier lives, and you may find that you enjoy your new healthy life just as much as they do!
